Real Madrid came from behind to beat Atlético Madrid 3-2 in a dramatic derby on Sunday, keeping their LaLiga title hopes alive and cutting Barcelona’s lead at the top to four points. Vinícius Júnior scored twice, including the decisive winner, as Madrid survived a late red card for Federico Valverde to claim a vital victory at the Santiago Bernabéu.
Atlético struck first in the 33rd minute through Ademola Lookman, who finished off a swift counterattack to stun the home crowd and give Diego Simeone’s side a halftime lead. Madrid, however, responded immediately after the break. Vinícius levelled from the penalty spot in the 52nd minute, before Valverde turned the game around just three minutes later, punishing Atlético’s defensive lapse with a composed finish to make it 2-1.
The visitors were not done. Nahuel Molina produced a spectacular long-range strike in the 66th minute to restore parity at 2-2 and reignite the contest. But Vinícius had the final say, driving forward to score the winner six minutes later and complete a thrilling comeback for Carlo Ancelotti’s side. The Brazil forward’s brace ensured Madrid stayed in touch in the title race heading into the international break.
Madrid’s task became more difficult late on when Valverde was shown a straight red card for a challenge on Alex Baena, leaving the hosts to defend their lead with 10 men in the closing stages. Atlético pushed for an equaliser and Julian Alvarez came close, striking the post, but the visitors were unable to find a third goal as Madrid held firm.
The result handed Atlético a bitter defeat in what was Simeone’s 50th derby in charge, while also ending Madrid’s long wait for a home league win over their city rivals. For Real, the victory was as significant as it was dramatic: a statement of resilience, attacking quality and continued belief in the championship race. For Atlético, it was another painful derby setback after twice fighting their way back into the match.
