Oscar Piastri delivered a masterclass in composure and precision to claim victory in a pulsating Grand Prix, as both McLaren drivers fought their way past early leader Max Verstappen in a race full of drama and strategic nuance.
Starting from fourth, Piastri methodically moved up the order, first dispatching Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli with a daring move through the Esses before hunting down and overtaking Verstappen on lap 14. The Australian showed patience and racecraft, attempting several passes before finally capitalizing on Verstappen’s deep entry into Turn One and cutting back to seize the lead.
“There was fire in my belly today,” Piastri said post-race. “It’s never easy passing Max, but we kept the pressure on and got the job done.”
Meanwhile, Lando Norris endured a rollercoaster afternoon. After a first-lap off-track excursion while battling Verstappen—following a controversial defensive move from the Red Bull driver—Norris fell to sixth. But the Briton fought back valiantly, slicing through the field and closing the gap to his teammate in the final laps. However, Piastri remained calm under pressure, maintaining a buffer to secure the win.
Russell Snatches Podium, Ferrari Tension Boils
George Russell took advantage of a mid-race virtual safety car to jump ahead of Verstappen and held off the Dutchman in the closing stages to finish third. Verstappen, unable to recover, settled for fourth.
Ferrari’s intra-team dynamics were once again under the spotlight. Lewis Hamilton, on an alternate tyre strategy, requested to be let past Charles Leclerc to chase down Antonelli. The team initially refused but relented later, allowing Hamilton through. However, the seven-time champion couldn’t make significant headway and failed to gap Leclerc, raising fresh questions about team strategy and priorities.
Stewards Clear Verstappen After First-Lap Clash
Norris was vocal about Verstappen’s aggressive move on the opening lap, which forced him off-track and cost him several positions. But stewards deemed it a racing incident, declining to penalize the Red Bull driver.
Despite that setback, McLaren’s dual charge brought the race alive, with their bold tactics and clean execution proving decisive.
