Real Madrid C.F. has officially announced that Xabi Alonso will take over as head coach of the club, signing a three-year deal that runs from 1 June 2025 to 30 June 2028.
The appointment marks a homecoming for Alonso, who enjoyed a glittering playing career at the Bernabéu between 2009 and 2014, making 236 appearances and winning six major titles, including the historic La Décima (10th European Cup) in Lisbon, one LaLiga title, two Copa del Reys, one European Super Cup, and one Spanish Super Cup.
A World-Class Pedigree
Alonso is widely regarded as one of the most intelligent and composed midfielders of his generation. Beyond his club accolades, he earned 113 caps for the Spanish national team, playing a key role in the country’s golden era, which yielded a World Cup title (2010) and two European Championships (2008, 2012).
From Bernabéu to Bundesliga Glory
After retiring from playing, Alonso began his coaching career at Real Madrid’s youth academy, where he led the Under-12s to league and national titles during the 2018–2019 season.
He quickly rose through the coaching ranks and made global headlines as manager of Bayer Leverkusen, transforming the German side into a dominant force. Under his leadership, Leverkusen secured a historic domestic treble—winning the Bundesliga, DFB-Pokal, and the German Super Cup over three seasons—earning Alonso widespread acclaim as one of the best coaches in the world.
What This Means for Real Madrid
- Alonso takes the helm at a club in transition, with several young talents forming the backbone of the next era.
- His tactical intelligence, calm demeanor, and deep understanding of Real Madrid’s culture are expected to usher in a new chapter of sustained success.
- Fans are optimistic about a return to a distinct identity rooted in possession-based football and tactical discipline.
Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez praised the appointment, calling Alonso a “true Madridista” and “the perfect leader to guide our team into the future.”
