As the 13th edition of the Women Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) kicks off in Morocco, nine-time champions Nigeria stand out as the team to beat. The Super Falcons—winners of the inaugural 1998 tournament and champions in 2000, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2010, 2014, 2016, and 2018—are eyeing a historic 10th title with confidence and hunger.
Coach Justine Madugu, leading the squad into the tournament, expressed satisfaction with the team’s readiness and unity:
“We are very focused on our realisable and achievable target of Mission X… The girls are ready and team spirit is high.”
Nigeria begins its campaign against Tunisia, bolstered by recent friendly victories over Ghana and Cameroon and a solid draw with Portugal.
The Super Falcons’ squad combines seasoned veterans and fresh talents, headlined by:
- Chiamaka Nnadozie, Africa’s top goalkeeper two years running
- Osinachi Ohale, a defensive stalwart
- Rising defenders like Ashleigh Plumptre, Michelle Alozie, and Miracle Usani
- Captain Rasheedat Ajibade, a midfield dynamo with leadership credentials
- Star forwards Asisat Oshoala, Francisca Ordega, and Esther Okoronkwo
Ajibade summed up the team’s mindset:
“We know it won’t be easy but we’re committed to showing up as our best selves.” With a deep bench and renewed tactical discipline, the Super Falcons aim to make another historic run—this time in pursuit of their 10th continental crown.
