Nigeria has submitted an expression of interest to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games in Abuja. The Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) confirmed that it met the March 28, 2025, deadline for submission and is now awaiting the Federal Government’s formal backing to proceed with the full bid process.
This initiative aligns with earlier statements from the Minister of Sports Development, Senator John Owan Enoh, who in March 2024 emphasized Nigeria’s capacity to host the Games, citing existing facilities and the potential for infrastructure improvements. He highlighted that no African nation has hosted the Commonwealth Games since their inception in 1930, describing this as a “black spot” on the continent’s sporting history.
Hosting the 2030 Commonwealth Games presents an opportunity for Nigeria to showcase its development, enhance its global standing, and invigorate its sports culture. The country’s experience in organizing large-scale events, such as the 2003 All-Africa Games in Abuja, provides a solid foundation for this endeavor.
The NOC’s expression of interest marks the initial step in a comprehensive bidding process. Securing the Federal Government’s support will be crucial for advancing to the formal bid stage and demonstrating Nigeria’s commitment to hosting the Games.
