Wolves striker Jorgen Strand Larsen came off the bench to score twice and seal a 3-2 League Cup victory over West Ham on Tuesday night, while Leeds United and Sunderland suffered shock exits on penalties.
Reports say Newcastle United had a £50 million bid rejected for Larsen, who is seen as a possible replacement for Alexander Isak. Despite starting on the bench, the Norwegian forward made the difference at Molineux.
Introduced with just 17 minutes to play, Larsen struck two quick goals in three minutes, turning the match around and piling more pressure on West Ham boss Graham Potter.
Earlier, Rodrigo Gomes gave Wolves the lead before Tomas Soucek and Lucas Paqueta put the Hammers in front. But West Ham’s struggles continue as they remain winless this season, having conceded eight goals in their opening two Premier League defeats.
Elsewhere, Leeds United, who spent nearly £100 million on new signings after returning to the Premier League, crashed out to Sheffield Wednesday. After a 1-1 draw, Leeds missed all three of their penalties, allowing Wednesday fans to celebrate despite ongoing protests against club owner Dejphon Chansiri.
Sunderland were also knocked out on spot-kicks after a 1-1 draw with League One side Huddersfield, adding to their disappointment.
In other matches, Brentford claimed a solid 2-0 victory over Bournemouth in an all-Premier League clash, with Fabio Carvalho and Igor Thiago on target. Burnley also advanced, thanks to a stoppage-time winner from Oliver Sonne in their 2-1 triumph against Derby County.
