Novak Djokovic battled past Lorenzo Musetti 4–6, 6–3, 7–5 to win the Athens Open on Saturday, sealing the 101st tour-level title of his career after nearly three hours of grinding, momentum-swinging tennis. The victory is the 24-time major champion’s second trophy of 2025, following Geneva in May.
At 38 years and five months, Djokovic becomes the oldest ATP title winner since Ken Rosewall, who lifted a trophy at age 43 in Hong Kong in 1977—another milestone as the Serb inches closer to Roger Federer’s 103 career titles (Jimmy Connors leads with 109).
The defeat cost Musetti a last-minute bid to qualify directly for the ATP Finals; Canada’s Félix Auger-Aliassime clinched the eighth and final Turin berth instead. However, with Djokovic later withdrawing through injury, Musetti was named his replacement for the year-end showpiece.
“An incredible battle… it could have gone either way,” Djokovic said, praising Musetti’s level after the Italian’s aggressive start forced a deciding set. The world No. 1 tightened his baseline game, earned a late break at 5–5 in the decider and served it out to cap a landmark week in Greece.
