Portuguese footballers Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva were laid to rest on Saturday in a deeply emotional joint funeral in their hometown of Gondomar, Portugal. The brothers, aged 28 and 25 respectively, tragically died in a car crash in Zamora, Spain, early Thursday morning. They were reportedly traveling to catch a ferry back to Liverpool, where Jota was due to rejoin pre-season training following minor surgery.
The ceremony at Igreja Matriz drew hundreds of mourners, including family, friends, and high-profile football figures. Liverpool teammates Virgil van Dijk and Andy Robertson attended, visibly moved as they carried floral tributes into the church. Other players and staff from Liverpool FC, still fresh from celebrating their Premier League victory just three months ago, arrived together in solidarity.
The funeral reflected the profound grief felt both locally and across the football world. The bell tolled solemnly as the silent procession entered the church. A sign held aloft bore a photo of Silva with the inscription: “Para sempre um de nós” (“Forever one of us”). Applause broke out among supporters as players arrived, with one woman calling out “Força!”—Portuguese for strength.
So great was the brothers’ influence that many mourners stood outside the church, comforting one another and donning jerseys from teams both had represented. The hour-long service was marked by quiet reverence, a testament to their impact on both football and their community.
