Christian Chukwu, a revered figure in Nigerian football, passed away on April 12, 2025, at the age of 74. Born on January 4, 1951, Chukwu’s legacy is deeply etched in the annals of Nigerian sports history.
As a formidable defender, Chukwu captained the Nigerian national team, then known as the Green Eagles, leading them to their first Africa Cup of Nations victory in 1980 with a 3–0 win over Algeria in Lagos. Beyond his playing career, Chukwu transitioned into coaching, taking the helm of the Nigerian national team from 2003 to 2005.
