FC Barcelona have been crowned La Liga champions after a hard-fought 2-0 victory over Espanyol in Thursday’s Catalan derby at the RCDE Stadium, securing an unassailable lead over rivals Real Madrid with two games left to play. The win sees Barça move seven points clear of second-placed Madrid, who had momentarily delayed their celebrations with a stoppage-time win against Mallorca on Wednesday. But Lamine Yamal’s 53rd-minute strike, followed by a late goal from Fermin Lopez, sealed the title in emphatic style.
The triumph marks a stellar debut season for head coach Hansi Flick, who now celebrates a domestic treble after already guiding the club to victories in the Supercopa de España in January and the Copa del Rey last month. It is Barcelona’s second La Liga title since 2019 and their first since Madrid claimed the crown in the 2023–24 campaign.
Flick’s men made a blistering start to the season, winning 11 of their first 12 matches, but a mid-season slump—managing just one win in eight games between November and January—briefly derailed their campaign, dropping them to third place.
However, a strong resurgence in the final third of the season saw Barcelona reclaim top spot and maintain momentum through the run-in, culminating in this title-clinching performance in hostile territory. The victory not only underscores Flick’s immediate impact but also highlights the emergence of young talents like Yamal and Lopez, signaling a promising new era for the Catalan giants.
