The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially declared Tuesday, September 2, 2025, as a public holiday. The announcement was made by the Ministry of Interior to mark a national observance, giving Nigerians a day off work and school to celebrate the occasion.
According to the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, the holiday is meant to promote unity, peace, and reflection among citizens. He noted, “Public holidays are not only for rest but also to remind us of the values that bind us as a nation. September 2 gives us the chance to reflect on our progress and challenges as one people.”
Moreover, the minister urged Nigerians to use the day positively, emphasizing the importance of peace and hard work in building a stronger country. “I call on all Nigerians to remain law-abiding, show love to one another, and work together for national growth,” he added.
Consequently, markets, schools, banks, and government offices will be closed nationwide. However, essential services are expected to continue operating to ensure security and basic needs are met.
The declaration of September 2, 2025 as a public holiday reaffirms the government’s commitment to fostering national identity and encouraging citizens to embrace unity and collective responsibility.
