A tragic and shocking assassination unfolded on August 30, 2025, when Andriy Parubiy, a prominent Ukrainian politician and former Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada, was shot dead in broad daylight in the western city of Lviv. The incident, described by President Zelenskyy as a “horrific murder,” has prompted an urgent manhunt and national mourning.
According to investigators, the attack occurred around noon local time on a street in Lviv. A gunman disguised as a food delivery courier, approaching Parubiy from behind, fired seven to eight shots, striking him at close range. The assassin then fled swiftly on an electric bicycle. Security services launched “Operation Siren” to apprehend the suspect.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the killing, pledging that “all necessary forces and means are engaged in the investigation and search for the killer.” The SBU (Security Service of Ukraine), alongside police, is leading the inquiry to determine the motive and bring the perpetrator to justice.
Andriy Parubiy, aged 54, had a distinguished record in Ukrainian politics. He served as Speaker of Parliament from 2016 to 2019 and had previously been Secretary of Ukraine’s National Security and Defence Council during the volatile period following the Euromaidan uprising in 2014. He rose to prominence as a leader during the pro‑European Maidan protests and remained a committed advocate for Ukrainian sovereignty.
Reactions poured in from all corners of Ukraine’s political spectrum. Former President Petro Poroshenko lamented the assassination as “a shot fired at the heart of Ukraine.” Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha hailed Parubiy as “a patriot and statesman” whose contributions to Ukraine’s defense and independence were invaluable. Though authorities have yet to confirm a motive, some political observers suspect potential Russian involvement, given Parubiy’s staunch anti‑Moscow stance. Officials are examining all possible leads as the investigation unfolds.
