The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has officially announced a significant upward review of passport application fees, with the new charges set to take effect from September 1, 2025. The revised rates will apply exclusively to passport applications processed within Nigeria, according to a statement issued on Thursday via the NIS’s official X handle and signed by the Service Public Relations Officer, ACI Akinsola Akinlabi.
New Passport Fees
Under the updated fee structure:
- The 32-page passport with 5-year validity will now cost ₦100,000, up from the previous ₦50,000.
- The 64-page passport with 10-year validity will be priced at ₦200,000, double its current rate of ₦100,000.
This is a sharp increase from earlier increments, where the 32-page booklet rose from ₦35,000 to ₦50,000, and the 64-page from ₦70,000 to ₦100,000.
However, passport fees for Nigerians in the diaspora remain unchanged:
- $150 for the 32-page (5-year validity) passport
- $230 for the 64-page (10-year validity) passport
NIS Justifies the Price Hike
In its official statement, the NIS said the fee increase is aimed at maintaining the quality, security features, and integrity of the Nigerian passport while ensuring efficient service delivery.
“The Service remains committed to balancing quality service delivery with the need to ensure passport services are accessible to all Nigerians,” the statement noted.
Reactions and Implications
The announcement has sparked mixed reactions across the country, especially amid prevailing economic hardship. Many Nigerians have expressed concerns about affordability, while others acknowledge the need for sustained improvements in passport processing and security features.
As the September 1 implementation date approaches, prospective applicants are advised to complete applications under the current pricing structure before the new rates take effect.
