The Minister of State for Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Dr. Tanko Sununu, has restated the Federal Government’s commitment to tackling poverty across Nigeria through targeted social interventions.
Speaking on Monday during an interview on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily, Sununu revealed that over two million households identified as vulnerable are set to benefit from the government’s conditional cash transfer scheme.
“In the next few days to come, before the end of August, we are going to reach out to 2.2 million households,” he announced.
According to him, the National Social Safety-Net Coordinating Office (NASSCO) is responsible for identifying beneficiaries, working with the national social register to target those in the lowest economic brackets.
The minister emphasized that the present administration has scaled up interventions to cushion the impact of economic hardship, particularly for the poor and vulnerable.
Highlighting progress so far, Sununu said the Conditional Cash Transfer (CCT) scheme had already disbursed huge sums to millions of Nigerians.
“For those Nigerians, it is a rapid conditional cash transfer. So far, we have disbursed ₦419 billion to five million Nigerians. We have distributed 71 per cent in the northern part and 21 per cent in the southern part of the country,” he explained.
