Alicia Kemp, 25, from Redditch, Worcestershire, has admitted to causing the death of a man in Perth, Australia, while riding an e-scooter more than three times over the legal alcohol limit.
The court heard that Kemp had been drinking heavily with a friend on 18 May before being removed from a bar for intoxication. Later that evening, the pair hired an e-scooter, with Kemp driving at 20–25km/h (12–15mph) when she struck 51-year-old Thanh Phan from behind on a city pavement.
Mr Phan, a father-of-two, suffered severe head injuries and died two days later in hospital from a brain bleed. Kemp’s passenger sustained a fractured skull and broken nose but survived.
Kemp’s blood alcohol content was 0.158 — more than triple Australia’s 0.05 legal limit. Prosecutors described her riding as “inexplicably dangerous,” with CCTV showing erratic movements before the fatal collision.
In Perth Magistrates Court on Monday, Kemp pleaded guilty to dangerous driving causing death while intoxicated, which carries a maximum 20-year prison sentence. A second charge of causing bodily harm to her passenger was dropped.
Her lawyer said she was “relieved” to admit guilt and hoped for sentencing before Christmas. Kemp, in Australia on a working holiday visa, remains in custody.
Mr Phan’s family described him as a devoted husband, father, brother, and friend.
