The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced it is currently reviewing 144 applications for political party registration ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections. This was disclosed by INEC National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mr. Sam Olumekun, in a statement issued in Abuja.
Olumekun also revealed that ahead of the November 2025 Anambra governorship election, INEC has registered 168,187 new voters. Of this number, 58% are female and 42% are male. Youths aged 18–34 account for nearly 54% of the new registrants, with businesspeople and students making up the largest occupational groups.
Regarding persons with disabilities, 303 registrants (24.92%) reported physical impairments, while 207 (17.02%) have albinism. Olumekun stated that these figures are preliminary, pending data cleanup through the Automated Biometric Identification System (ABIS) and the claims and objections process. Once completed, the final voter list will be published by polling unit.
He also assured Anambra residents that despite the tight 105-day timeline to the election, all Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) — including new, transferred, and replacement cards — will be ready for collection well in advance. On party registration, Olumekun confirmed that INEC’s newly developed in-house party registration portal has passed final testing and has been approved for deployment.
