Tensions in the Middle East escalated sharply as Iran launched six missiles targeting US military bases in Qatar and Iraq, in what it called retaliation for a US bombing of Iranian nuclear facilities. Explosions were reported over Doha, with Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) confirming the strikes as part of Operation “Annunciation of Victory”, a military response it claims was aimed at US assets in the region.
Qatar’s Defence Ministry acknowledged that missiles were fired at the US-run Al Udeid Air Base, the largest American military facility in the Gulf, but stated that its air defense systems successfully intercepted the missiles, and that no casualties or damage were reported. Nevertheless, Qatar called the strike a “flagrant violation” of its sovereignty.
In a strongly worded statement, Qatar’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Majed Al-Ansari said the country “reserves the right to respond directly in a manner proportional to the nature and scale of this blatant aggression.” He confirmed the evacuation of Al Udeid ahead of the attack as a precautionary measure.
This marks the most direct attack by Iran on US military positions in the Gulf region in recent memory and raises the risk of further military escalation. The US Department of Defense has not yet issued an official statement at the time of this report. With the region already on edge, this development could significantly alter diplomatic and military dynamics, particularly involving the US, Iran, and Gulf states.
