Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has accused President Bola Tinubu’s administration of undermining democracy and worsening the country’s governance since assuming office two years ago.
In a statement titled “Democracy in Decline: Reflecting on Two Years of Tinubu’s Governance”, Obi claimed Nigeria is now facing increased poverty, insecurity, corruption, and economic hardship.
“Democracy is said to be a government of the people, by the people, and for the people, yet none of these measures exist in our democracy today,” Obi said.
He criticized the President’s frequent international trips, urging him to instead visit Nigeria’s 36 states. “Mr. President, you have already made over 30 international trips… You need to go around the country to see,” he noted.
Obi cited data to back his concerns, stating GDP per capita had dropped by nearly 50%, while multidimensional poverty now affects over half the population. “Nigerians live in worsening insecurity, widespread corruption, hunger, and general despondency,” he added.
He also lamented the decline in education and healthcare, saying, “Over 18.3 million children are out of school, and less than 20% of primary health centers are functional.”
Obi accused the government of excessive borrowing despite fuel subsidy savings, with “no significant improvement in education, healthcare, or poverty alleviation.” He further claimed ₦7 trillion in questionable budget padding by the National Assembly.
Finally, Obi urged Tinubu to emulate former leaders like Umaru Yar’Adua and Goodluck Jonathan by prioritizing transparency and national interest: “We must end this era of impunity and state capture,” he said.
