Ini Ememobong, a key member of the Akwa Ibom State Executive Council, has stepped down from his position, following Governor Umo Eno’s move from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Before tendering his resignation on Friday, Ememobong held the portfolio of Commissioner for Information, Special Duties, and Ibom Deep Sea Port. His decision follows a directive from Governor Eno that political appointees not aligned with the switch to the APC should voluntarily exit the administration.
“You have directed that any appointee who is unwilling to accompany you to switch from the Peoples Democratic Party to the All Progressives Congress, should resign,” Ememobong wrote in his resignation letter dated June 6, 2025.
“Ipso facto, based on my personal conviction, I hereby most respectfully tender my resignation as Honourable Commissioner for Special Duties and Ibom Deep Sea Port and a member of the State Executive Council.”
Governor Eno’s defection comes weeks after a similar move by his Delta State counterpart, Sheriff Oborevwori—an emerging pattern many see as strategic positioning ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Hints of Eno’s political shift emerged in April when he publicly backed President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid at the launch of a major highway project in Nsit-Antai Local Government Area.
Two weeks prior to Ememobong’s departure, Eno had instructed his commissioners and aides to either join him in the APC or vacate their roles.
Eno, who became governor in March 2023 and took office that May, previously served as Commissioner for Lands and Water Resources. His background includes experience in the banking sector and the hospitality industry. He is also the founder of All Nations Christian Ministry International.
