The Federal Government of Nigeria has expressed its readiness to receive and reintegrate Nigerians affected by U.S. President Donald Trump’s deportation order.
Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, confirmed this in an exclusive interview with Sunday PUNCH, stating that the government is prepared to support deported citizens and ensure their smooth reintegration into society.
With approximately 3,690 Nigerians facing deportation due to Trump’s crackdown on illegal immigrants, Tunji-Ojo assured that the government would provide necessary assistance, including reuniting deportees with their families. He also revealed that a special facility has been established at Lagos airport to provide care for deportees suffering from mental fatigue and depression.
Tunji-Ojo emphasized the government’s commitment to its migration policies, stating, “We’re a responsible government, and we understand what we need to do. Rest assured that we will not shy away from our responsibility.”
He highlighted collaboration with the British Council in setting up the Lagos airport facility, commissioned in December, to support returnees and reassure them that Nigeria is a country that cares. He also stressed that President Bola Tinubu is committed to the well-being of all Nigerians, both at home and abroad.
