Newly appointed D’Tigers head coach David Fizdale says he is excited and fully committed to leading Nigeria’s men’s basketball team, with qualification for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics already a major target.
The Nigeria Basketball Federation confirmed Fizdale’s appointment last weekend, naming the former NBA coach as head coach of the senior men’s national team. The NBBF said the move was part of efforts to raise standards, strengthen the programme and position D’Tigers for future international success.
Speaking in an interview with M4STV, Fizdale said he had already begun studying Nigerian players in the United States and Europe, including prospects who could earn trials with the national team. He said his previous work with several Nigerian players would help him build quickly.
“I have coached Chimezie Metu, I have coached Josh Okogie, and I coached Ekpe Udoh,” Fizdale said. He added that he had also consulted former D’Tigers coach Mike Brown, who led Nigeria at the Tokyo Olympics.
Fizdale said he would not have accepted the job if he could not give it his full attention. “I am extremely available,” he said. “I have never done anything that I can’t put my whole heart into.”
The 51-year-old previously served as head coach of the Memphis Grizzlies and New York Knicks, compiling a 71-134 regular-season record. He has also worked as an NBA assistant, most recently with the Phoenix Suns from 2023 to 2025.
His immediate task is to rebuild Nigeria’s men’s programme and prepare the team for upcoming international qualifiers. Reports say Nigeria’s qualification campaign will include games in Angola, with D’Tigers expected to face strong African opposition as they target the 2027 FIBA World Cup and the 2028 Olympics.
Nigeria have appeared at three Olympic Games — London 2012, Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020 — and won their first AfroBasket title in 2015.
Fizdale’s appointment has raised expectations that Nigeria can again attract top diaspora talent and restore the momentum that once made D’Tigers one of Africa’s most exciting basketball teams.
