Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu has approved the dismissal and prosecution of Assistant Superintendent of Police Nuhu Usman and other officers implicated in the fatal shooting of a suspect in Effurun, Delta State, in a move the police say reflects a zero-tolerance stance on extrajudicial killings and abuse of force. The decision followed recommendations by the Force Disciplinary Committee after a review of the incident.
At an emergency press briefing in Abuja, Disu said the panel found that Usman acted in gross violation of Force Order 237 and other regulations governing the use of firearms. He said the affected officers would be handed over to the appropriate judicial authorities to face criminal charges for unlawful homicide once the Police Service Commission ratifies the dismissals in line with due process.
The case stems from the killing of 28-year-old Mene Ogidi in Effurun on April 26, 2026, an incident that sparked widespread outrage after videos circulated online. Police said operatives attached to Area Command Effurun had acted on intelligence that Ogidi was apprehended while allegedly attempting to waybill a parcel said to contain a Beretta pistol and four rounds of ammunition.
Disu expressed condolences to Ogidi’s family and said no police uniform confers the right to take life outside the law. He added that the force remains committed to discipline, professionalism and the protection of citizens’ rights, while promising that justice would not only be done but seen to be done.
The decision is one of the strongest recent disciplinary steps announced publicly by the police leadership and is likely to be closely watched as a test of whether internal sanctions in high-profile abuse cases will lead to criminal accountability in court.
