Senegal’s national team went ahead with plans to showcase the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) trophy at the Stade de France, defying a decision by the Confederation of African Football to strip them of the title.
The ceremony took place ahead of an international friendly, with Senegalese players presenting the trophy despite CAF’s ruling that overturned their victory and awarded the title to Morocco following a disputed final.
Senegal’s football authorities have rejected the decision, insisting the result should stand and maintaining that the team rightfully earned the title on the pitch. Head coach Pape Bouna Thiaw reiterated that there is “no doubt we are African champions,” while officials confirmed an appeal has been lodged with the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
The move has drawn criticism from Moroccan officials, who argue the display undermines CAF’s authority, but Senegal has pressed ahead, signalling its continued challenge to the ruling as the legal process unfolds.
