North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has argued that the ongoing war in Iran highlights the necessity of nuclear weapons for his country’s security, according to state media reports. Kim said the conflict, which has drawn intense international involvement, demonstrates why a strong nuclear deterrent is essential to protect national sovereignty and prevent foreign intervention.
Speaking at a high‑level gathering, Kim asserted that the situation in the Middle East reinforces Pyongyang’s long‑standing position that possessing nuclear capabilities is critical to deterring external threats. He framed North Korea’s own arsenal as a guarantee of self‑defense, pointing to the Iran crisis as evidence of what can happen to states without credible nuclear deterrence.
Kim’s remarks align with Pyongyang’s broader strategy of defending its nuclear status, which it says cannot be negotiated away and should be recognised internationally as part of its sovereign right.
