The Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) has reiterated that night-time travel on Lagos inland waterways remains prohibited, warning fun seekers heading to Ilashe Beach for a Sunday concert by Fuji musician Alhaji Sule Alao Malaika to comply strictly with safety rules.
In a statement issued on Sunday, LASWA General Manager Damilola Emmanuel said both commercial and private boats are restricted to daylight operations because of heightened risks associated with night voyages, including poor visibility and navigational dangers.
“LASWA wishes to urgently remind the general public… planning to visit Ilashe Beach for his concert today… that night-time travel on Lagos inland waterways remains strictly prohibited,” Emmanuel said.
LASWA urged passengers to plan ahead, arrive early, and avoid any attempt to return by water after sunset, stressing that safety measures are designed to protect lives and property on the waterways. The agency also reminded boat operators to observe authorised operating hours, enforce safety protocols, and ensure passengers wear life jackets.
Emmanuel said LASWA, working with the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) and other safety and security agencies, would intensify patrols across key routes during the period, warning that violators would face legal consequences.
The advisory aligns with recent safety directives issued jointly by LASWA and NIWA during peak travel periods, including tighter enforcement of life-jacket use and restrictions intended to curb accidents linked to night operations.
LASWA said its goal remains “safe, efficient and well-regulated” water transportation, adding that commuter safety requires shared responsibility between operators and passengers.
