Kaduna, Nigeria — The Diocese of Kaduna, Anglican Communion, has announced the death of The Venerable Edwin Achi, Priest-in-Charge of Ebenezer Anglican Church, Ungwan Maijero, who was kidnapped alongside his family on October 28, 2025.
His death was confirmed in an official statement released via the Diocese’s Facebook page, describing his passing as a “painful loss” to the entire church community.
“With heavy hearts and deep sorrow, the Diocese of Kaduna, Anglican Communion, announces the passing unto glory of The Venerable Edwin Achi,” the statement read. “His transition is a painful loss to the entire Diocese, the clergy, the Church family, and all who were blessed by his faithful ministry, humble spirit, and unwavering devotion to the service of God.”
Ven. Achi was abducted with his wife and daughter in late October. While his death has now been confirmed, his wife and daughter remain in captivity. The Diocese urged continued prayers for their safe release.
“We continue to pray for the release of his wife and daughter who are still in the hands of kidnappers,” the statement added.
In honour of the late priest, the Diocese also announced the cancellation of the much-anticipated ‘Stand Up for Jesus 2025’ programme, a key diocesan event that had been slated to draw large crowds of worshippers and youth.
“On this note, the Standup for Jesus 2025 is hereby cancelled in honor of the late Venerable Edwin Achi. The Lord be with you.”
Church members and clergy across Kaduna have been expressing grief and shock, remembering Ven. Achi as a devoted pastor, mentor, and spiritual father whose ministry touched many lives. Parishioners recall him as a gentle but firm leader, committed to prayer, evangelism, and community support.
The incident has once again highlighted growing concerns over insecurity and targeted abductions affecting clerics and worshippers in parts of northern Nigeria, with church leaders repeatedly calling on authorities to do more to protect vulnerable communities.
As condolences pour in from across the Anglican Communion and beyond, the Diocese of Kaduna has asked the faithful to stand in solidarity with Achi’s family and congregation — mourning a beloved priest while still hoping for the safe return of his wife and daughter.
