Virginia state senator Ghazala Hashmi has made history by winning the race for lieutenant governor, becoming the first Muslim woman ever elected to statewide office in the Commonwealth.
Hashmi, a Democrat, secured victory after a spirited campaign centered on education reform, healthcare expansion, and social justice. Her success marks a major milestone for representation and diversity in Virginia politics.
In her victory speech, Hashmi expressed gratitude to voters for embracing inclusion and progress.
“Tonight, we proved that Virginia’s strength lies in its diversity and shared values,” she said.
A former educator, Hashmi first gained statewide attention in 2019 when she became the first Muslim woman elected to the Virginia Senate. Her latest triumph further cements her reputation as a trailblazer and a voice for underrepresented communities.
