Tensions flared outside the Spotify Camp Nou on Tuesday as dozens of construction workers gathered to protest their sudden dismissal from the stadium’s massive renovation project. The workers, many of whom had been involved in the redevelopment for months, accused the contractors of unfair termination and poor labor practices.
Chanting slogans and holding banners demanding justice, the protesters blocked parts of the street leading to the stadium, calling on FC Barcelona and the main construction firms to address their grievances. They alleged that they were laid off without prior notice or proper compensation, despite ongoing work at the site.
One of the protesters said, “We’ve given our time and energy to this project, but they let us go without explanation. We deserve to be treated with respect.”
The redevelopment of Spotify Camp Nou — part of Barcelona’s ambitious “Espai Barça” modernization plan — has been one of Europe’s most significant sports infrastructure projects. However, reports of labor disputes and delayed payments have raised concerns about the management of the multi-billion-euro venture.
Local labor unions have also voiced their support for the workers, urging the city authorities and FC Barcelona to ensure fair treatment and compliance with employment laws.
Meanwhile, the club has yet to issue an official statement regarding the protest, though sources close to the management said efforts were underway to mediate between the contractors and the affected workers to prevent further disruption.
The demonstration underscores the growing tension surrounding the project, which is expected to transform the historic stadium into a modern football arena by 2026.
