Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has expressed deep worry over Donald Trump’s recent threat of possible U.S. military action in Nigeria, describing it as a matter that should alarm every citizen.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, Obi said Trump’s comments were reckless and unacceptable, warning that such rhetoric could undermine Nigeria’s sovereignty and destabilize the region.
“Trump’s military threat should give every Nigerian serious concern,” Obi stated. “No foreign nation has the right to interfere militarily in our internal affairs. Nigeria’s challenges are domestic and must be solved through dialogue, reform, and good governance — not external aggression.”
He urged President Bola Tinubu to respond firmly and diplomatically, ensuring that the nation’s independence and dignity are not compromised. Obi further called on the international community to respect Nigeria’s sovereignty and support peaceful engagement rather than threats.
The former governor also used the opportunity to call for unity among Nigerians, saying the country’s internal divisions often make it vulnerable to external pressure. “At times like this, we must stand together, irrespective of political or religious differences, to defend our homeland,” he added.
Obi concluded by emphasizing that true national security lies not in foreign alliances or threats, but in justice, equity, and responsible leadership that addresses the root causes of Nigeria’s instability.
