Casablanca, Morocco — An apartment block in the heart of Morocco’s economic capital collapsed early Monday, killing at least two people and leaving others feared trapped, according to local sources.
Residents said the multi-storey building, which housed several families, gave way without warning shortly after daybreak. Among the confirmed fatalities are an elderly couple who lived on the top floor and were unable to escape before the structure crumbled.
Civil protection units and firefighters rushed to the scene and have been working through the day to clear debris and search for survivors. Rescuers are attempting to free a 26-year-old man reported to be pinned beneath the rubble, while medical teams remain on standby to treat the injured.
Authorities have cordoned off the area and opened an inquiry to determine the cause of the collapse. Municipal officials have urged nearby residents to avoid the site to allow emergency crews to operate safely as the rescue operation continues and the full extent of the damage is assessed.
