Thailand is in mourning following the death of former Queen Sirikit, who passed away at the age of 93. The Royal Household Bureau confirmed her death on Saturday, marking the end of an era for one of the country’s most revered royal figures.
Queen Sirikit, the widow of the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej, was deeply respected for her lifelong service to the Thai people. Known for her grace and compassion, she played a pivotal role in promoting social welfare, women’s empowerment, and cultural preservation throughout her reign.
Born on August 12, 1932, Sirikit Kitiyakara became queen consort in 1950 after marrying King Bhumibol. Together, they formed a beloved royal partnership that symbolized unity and stability in Thailand for decades. Even after the king’s passing in 2016, her influence and legacy continued to resonate strongly across the nation.
Over the years, Queen Sirikit championed numerous charitable causes, particularly through the establishment of the Queen’s Support Foundation, which aimed to uplift rural communities and preserve traditional crafts. Her humanitarian efforts earned her international recognition and several prestigious honors.
In recent years, she had faced declining health and had largely withdrawn from public life, with her son, King Maha Vajiralongkorn (Rama X), assuming greater royal duties.
As news of her death spread, tributes poured in from across Thailand and around the world. Flags were lowered to half-mast, and citizens gathered outside royal palaces to pay their respects. The government announced a period of national mourning, describing her as “a symbol of devotion, dignity, and love for the Thai people.”
Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the Royal Household in the coming days.
