Renowned labour activist Abiodun Aremu, Secretary of the Joint Action Front (JAF) — a coalition of pro-labour civil society groups — died Sunday evening after being struck by a vehicle in Ota, Ogun State.
Local sources said the incident occurred around 6 p.m. as Aremu was crossing the road near his residence. He was rushed to a nearby hospital and placed on oxygen but was later pronounced dead. He is expected to be buried Monday morning, according to associates. Further details about the crash were not immediately available.
Aremu was a prominent voice in Nigeria’s pro-democracy and labour movements, frequently organizing mass actions with JAF alongside trade unions on issues ranging from fuel pricing and wages to governance and civil liberties. Colleagues described him as an unrelenting mobiliser and strategist whose work connected grassroots organisers, students and workers across the country.
Tributes from labour and civil society circles were beginning to pour in late Sunday, recalling Aremu’s decades of activism and his role in building broad coalitions for social justice.
Officials had not issued an immediate statement on the incident. Arrangements for funeral rites were being finalised by family and associates
