LGBTQ+ Catholics have made history with the first officially listed pilgrimage to the Vatican as part of the 2025 Jubilee. Organized by Italy’s “La Tenda di Gionata” (Jonathan’s Tent), the pilgrimage brought together over 1,000 participants from more than 20 countries, who walked through the Holy Door of St. Peter’s Basilica, a deeply symbolic moment of spiritual inclusion.
The Vatican clarified that inclusion in its official Jubilee calendar serves as a logistical accommodation—not an endorsement. Still, the event signals a shift toward inclusivity prompted during Pope Francis’s papacy
New Pope Leo XIV, though maintaining traditional doctrinal stances, has thus far indicated continuity with Francis’s pastoral outreach. He met with LGBTQ+ advocate Rev. James Martin and privately affirmed the message of welcome toward LGBTQ+ Catholics. The pilgrimage’s success represents a significant milestone in the Church’s evolving approach to marginalized communities.
