A United Nations Peace Ambassador has revealed why the global body is prioritising the fight against insurgency and poverty in Nigeria, stressing that both challenges remain the biggest obstacles to peace and sustainable development in the country.
Speaking at a peace and security forum in Abuja on Thursday, the ambassador explained that Nigeria’s progress and stability cannot be achieved without addressing these pressing issues.
“We are focusing on insurgency and poverty because they are interconnected. Insurgency thrives where there is deprivation, and poverty deepens when insecurity persists. Tackling both is the only way to secure Nigeria’s future,” the UN envoy said.
The ambassador noted that Nigeria plays a critical role in Africa’s stability, and global partners have a vested interest in ensuring the country overcomes its security and socio-economic challenges.
“If Nigeria is stable, Africa benefits. That is why our programmes are targeted at strengthening peace, empowering communities, and creating opportunities for the youth,” he added.
The UN also pledged continued collaboration with the Nigerian government, civil society, and local communities to roll out initiatives aimed at job creation, education, and deradicalisation of insurgents.
Security experts welcomed the UN’s commitment, describing it as timely given the rising concerns over terrorism, banditry, and economic hardship. One analyst remarked:
“This intervention recognises that insecurity and poverty are Nigeria’s twin problems. Addressing them together is the right approach.”
With Nigeria gearing up for fresh development plans, the UN ambassador reiterated that peacebuilding and poverty reduction will remain at the heart of the organisation’s mission in the country.
