The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has dismissed claims that former President Goodluck Jonathan is planning a political comeback in the 2027 elections. Wike, during a media interaction in Abuja, also declared that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has lost its relevance, describing it as a “dead party” ruined by its own leaders.
Wike, a former governor of Rivers State, said he has not discussed any political ambitions with Jonathan and cautioned against spreading baseless rumours. “President Jonathan has never told me he’s running in 2027. Nigerians enjoy creating false stories,” he said.
He went on to criticize the PDP’s current state, saying it no longer represents the strong opposition it once was. “The PDP we worked hard to build no longer exists. The leadership has destroyed its foundation. What’s left is just a name without structure or vision,” he lamented.
The FCT minister further questioned the opposition’s capacity to challenge the All Progressives Congress (APC), arguing that internal disunity has crippled the party’s credibility. “How can a party that cannot manage itself claim it can manage a nation?” Wike asked.
Clarifying his alliance with the Tinubu administration, Wike insisted that his decision to serve as FCT minister was based on patriotism, not partisanship. “I’m working for Nigeria, not for any political party. My loyalty is to progress and good governance,” he asserted.
Analysts note that Wike’s remarks underline the growing divisions within the PDP, as some of its top members defect to rival parties ahead of the 2027 elections. His comments have since stirred debate among party loyalists—some accusing him of betrayal, while others admit he may simply be voicing uncomfortable truths about the party’s decline.
