The All Progressives Congress (APC) has urged Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi to put Nigeria’s national interest above political sentiments, following his comments on Donald Trump’s recent military threat against the country.
In a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, the ruling party said Obi’s reaction to Trump’s remarks appeared “hasty and politically driven,” stressing that such sensitive issues should be approached with unity and diplomacy, not partisan undertones.
“On matters affecting Nigeria’s sovereignty, our collective interest must rise above politics,” the APC said. “This is not a time for political point-scoring but for all leaders — regardless of party — to speak with one voice in defense of our nation.”
The party commended President Bola Tinubu and the National Security Adviser for their calm and strategic response to Trump’s comments, which it described as misguided and inflammatory.
While reaffirming its commitment to protecting Nigeria’s sovereignty, the APC also appealed to opposition leaders to avoid statements that could embolden external actors or portray the country as divided in the face of foreign threats.
“The unity of our nation is non-negotiable,” the statement added. “We must show the world that Nigeria’s democracy is strong, and our leaders — across political lines — are capable of defending it.”
The APC concluded by calling on Nigerians to remain vigilant and patriotic, assuring that the government would continue to engage diplomatically to protect the nation’s image and interests on the global stage.
