Former President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Dr. Olisa Agbakoba (SAN), has thrown his weight behind President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s decision to replace the nation’s service chiefs, describing it as a strategic and constitutional move aimed at strengthening national security.
In a statement released on Friday, Agbakoba said the president acted within his powers and that the change was necessary to maintain stability amid rising coup rumours across parts of Africa. “The president has done what is right. Leadership renewal in the military is healthy for democracy and national security,” he stated.
Furthermore, the senior lawyer noted that the removal of service chiefs should not be viewed as a reaction to political pressure but as part of ongoing efforts to reposition Nigeria’s defense structure. “It is the prerogative of the Commander-in-Chief to appoint or replace service chiefs in line with national interest. The constitution empowers him to do so without apology,” Agbakoba added.
Amid speculation that the reshuffle was linked to fears of disloyalty within the military, Agbakoba dismissed such claims as baseless. Instead, he urged Nigerians to support the new military leadership and focus on fostering unity and professionalism in the armed forces.
In addition, he emphasized the need for transparency and accountability within the defense sector, noting that effective leadership rotation can help eliminate complacency and promote operational excellence. “Fresh ideas and renewed energy are critical to tackling insecurity and strengthening public trust in the military,” he said.
Political observers have also described Tinubu’s decision as timely, especially given regional instability and recent coups in parts of West and Central Africa.
As the new service chiefs assume office, expectations remain high that the changes will bring renewed momentum to Nigeria’s ongoing battle against insurgency, banditry, and other security challenges.
