The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a 28-year-old alleged armed robbery kingpin, hired assassin, and murderer, John Samuel, for masterminding last month’s violent gold-jewellery attack in Ikeja. According to a police statement, Samuel—an ex-convict from Akwa Ibom State—was tracked to his hideout in Epe and apprehended around 2:00 p.m. on September 19, 2025.
Police said Samuel was recently released from prison after serving a six-year sentence for armed robbery. Investigators linked him to the August 18, 2025 incident on Gbajobi Street, Allen Avenue, where the suspect, wielding an English pistol, allegedly shot and wounded businessman Gbenga “Obama” before snatching an expensive gold necklace and other valuables in broad daylight. CCTV footage reportedly captured Samuel firing the shot while an accomplice waited on a motorcycle for a swift escape.
The victim has since been treated and discharged from hospital, the statement noted. During interrogation, the suspect allegedly confessed to selling the stolen necklace for ₦4 million, far below its actual value.
Confirming the arrest, the Commissioner of Police, CP Olohudare Jimoh, praised the operatives’ gallantry and assured residents that a manhunt is underway for the remaining gang members. “The suspect is vicious and notorious for shooting at victims before dispossessing them of valuables. We will ensure that all his accomplices are brought to justice,” he said.
The CP further warned criminal elements that Lagos offers no hiding place, reaffirming the Command’s commitment to the safety and protection of all residents.
