The Enugu State Government has condemned the gruesome murder of Rev. Fr. Mathew Eya of the Nsukka Catholic Diocese, who was shot dead by unidentified gunmen in the Eha-Ndiagu community of Ehalumona. The attack occurred along the Alumona–Eha Ndiagu Road in Nsukka Local Government Area on Friday.
In a statement issued on Saturday by the Commissioner for Information and Communication, Dr. Malachy Agbo, the government described the killing as “cowardly and cold-blooded,” assuring residents that the security of lives and property remains a top priority. Authorities vowed to deploy every available resource—including technology and credible intelligence—to track down the perpetrators and dismantle “remnant agents of evil” in the state.
To accelerate the investigation, the state announced a ₦10 million reward for anyone with information leading to the arrest of those responsible. Members of the public with credible tips are urged to contact 07077451426 immediately.
The government extended its condolences to the late priest’s family, the Catholic Diocese of Nsukka, and the wider Catholic faithful, pledging that justice will be pursued swiftly and decisively. The administration also appealed for calm and cooperation, encouraging community members to share information that could aid ongoing inquiries.
Rev. Fr. Eya hailed from Ugbaike in Enugu Ezike, Igboeze North Local Government Area. His killing has reignited public concern over sporadic acts of violence in parts of the state, with religious and community leaders calling for sustained vigilance and stronger security collaboration.
Authorities reiterated that actionable intelligence from residents remains vital to crime-fighting efforts. “We will not spare any resources within our reach,” the statement emphasized, as security agencies intensify patrols and investigative operations in and around Nsukka LGA.
Further updates are expected as the investigation progresses and community engagement deepens.
