Nigeria’s Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has announced a major breakthrough in passport processing, revealing that the country can now produce 5,000 passports within just five hours.

Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja on Wednesday, Tunji-Ojo said the reform was part of the federal government’s commitment to end the long-standing delays and frustrations Nigerians face in obtaining international passports.

“Today, we have the capacity to deliver 5,000 passports in five hours. This is a product of innovation, technology, and the dedication of our team to serve Nigerians better,” the minister stated.

He explained that the new system was designed to eliminate bottlenecks, reduce human interference, and ensure transparency in the issuance process. “We are not just improving speed; we are restoring trust. Nigerians deserve a seamless and reliable passport process,” he added.

The development has been widely welcomed by citizens and stakeholders, many of whom have long complained about the difficulties associated with passport acquisition.

According to Tunji-Ojo, the government is also working to decentralise passport services to ensure Nigerians in the diaspora benefit from the reforms.

“We are extending these innovations to our embassies and consulates so that no Nigerian, anywhere in the world, feels stranded,” he assured.

Analysts believe the initiative could significantly improve Nigeria’s global image while boosting confidence in government services.

With this new milestone, the Interior Ministry says it is determined to sustain momentum in delivering efficient, technology-driven solutions to meet the needs of Nigerians at home and abroad.
