The Kano State Hospitals Management Board has suspended three personnel linked to the death of a woman, Aishatu Umar, following a surgical procedure at the Abubakar Imam Urology Centre in Kano, amid allegations that scissors used during the operation were forgotten inside her body.
Officials said a preliminary investigation ordered by the board confirmed that the incident occurred at the facility. In a statement issued through the board’s Public Relations Officer, Samira Suleiman, the Executive Secretary of the board, Dr. Mansur Mudi Nagoda, said the affected personnel have been barred from clinical duties with immediate effect.
The board said the matter has also been referred to the Kano State Medical Ethical Committee for further investigation and appropriate disciplinary action, in line with existing laws, professional guidelines and ethical standards.
Expressing condolences to the family of the deceased, the Hospitals Management Board said it would not condone negligence in any form and pledged to strengthen internal monitoring and enforcement of professional standards across state health facilities to prevent a recurrence.
The incident has sparked public concern and renewed calls for stricter patient-safety protocols, transparency in clinical investigations, and accountability for medical errors in public hospitals.
