MANCHESTER, England, Jan. 6, 2026 — Manchester United have dismissed Ruben Amorim with immediate effect, ending the Portuguese coach’s 14-month spell at Old Trafford as the club seeks to steady its season from sixth place in the Premier League.
In a short statement on Monday, United said the decision was taken “reluctantly” but was intended to give the team “the best opportunity of the highest possible Premier League finish.” The club thanked Amorim for his contribution and wished him well.
Amorim, appointed in November 2024 as successor to Erik ten Hag, leaves after guiding United to the UEFA Europa League final in Bilbao last May, but with mounting turbulence on and off the pitch.
Multiple reports said the split followed a breakdown in relationships inside the club’s football leadership group, with chief executive Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox central to the decision-making. ESPN reported that Amorim’s departure came less than 24 hours after a charged post-match media session following a 1–1 draw with Leeds United, during which he pushed back at the club hierarchy and insisted he wanted to be seen as “manager” rather than “head coach.”
The Independent also reported that internal frustration grew over Amorim’s tactical direction and willingness to adapt, describing a heated debrief with Wilcox late last week as a key moment in the chain of events that led to his dismissal.
Former United midfielder Darren Fletcher will take charge as caretaker for Wednesday’s league match away to Burnley, the club confirmed. ESPN and other outlets reported that United is leaning toward an interim solution until later in the season, with a permanent appointment more likely in the summer.
The sacking immediately reignited debate over United’s post-Sir Alex Ferguson instability. Reuters quoted club legend Gary Neville urging United to stop “experiments” in the dugout and hire a coach aligned with the club’s traditional identity, noting United are 17 points behind leaders Arsenal after 20 games.
