The Ogun State Police Command has arraigned the driver of a Lexus Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) involved in a fatal crash that claimed the lives of two close associates of former world heavyweight boxing champion, Anthony Joshua.
The driver, Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, 46, was brought before a Sagamu Magistrate Court on Friday, according to a statement by the state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi.
Kayode faces multiple charges, including dangerous driving causing death, contrary to Section 5(1) of the Federal Highway Act, Cap F135, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004, as applicable in Ogun State. He is also charged with reckless and negligent driving, driving without due care and attention causing bodily harm and damage to property, and driving without a valid National Driver’s Licence, contrary to Sections 6(1), 7(1) and 10(1) of the same Act.
The court granted him bail in the sum of ₦5 million with two sureties, but he was remanded in custody pending fulfillment of the bail conditions. The case was adjourned to January 20, 2026, for further hearing.
The crash occurred on Monday along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, when the Lexus SUV driven by Kayode reportedly collided with a stationary truck while conveying Joshua and his two friends, Latif Ayodele and Sina Ghami. Ayodele and Ghami died at the scene, while Joshua and the driver sustained minor injuries.
The incident drew widespread attention after social media reports falsely suggested that Joshua was behind the wheel. The Ogun State Police Command has since clarified that Anthony Joshua was not the driver and is not a suspect in the case.
Joshua was briefly hospitalised in Lagos “under observation” before being discharged on Wednesday evening, after doctors declared him clinically fit to continue his recovery at home. On Thursday, the boxer and his mother quietly visited a funeral home in Lagos to pay their last respects to Ayodele and Ghami, as arrangements for repatriating their remains to the United Kingdom were finalised.
DSP Babaseyi said police investigations into the crash have been concluded and assured that prosecutors will “diligently pursue the case in accordance with the law.”
He reiterated the Command’s warning to motorists to obey speed limits, avoid reckless driving and ensure their vehicles are roadworthy, especially on major highways such as the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, which has recorded frequent fatal crashes over the years.
