The Lagos State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of a top official of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) over alleged involvement in a murder case.
According to police authorities, the union leader, whose name has not yet been disclosed, was picked up in Lagos following intelligence reports linking him to the killing of a rival during a violent clash.
Spokesperson for the Lagos Police Command, Benjamin Hundeyin, said investigations are ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
“The suspect is currently in our custody. He is being interrogated over his alleged role in the murder, and the case will be pursued to a logical conclusion,” Hundeyin stated.
Witnesses said the clash erupted during a leadership tussle in the union, escalating into violence that left one person dead. The incident has raised renewed concerns over the activities of transport union members in Lagos, where disputes have often led to bloodshed.
Human rights groups have commended the police for acting swiftly but have urged authorities to ensure a thorough investigation.
“Justice must not only be done but must be seen to be done. Too often, cases like this are swept under the carpet,” one activist noted.
Meanwhile, the Lagos State Government has called for calm, assuring residents that security agencies are working to maintain peace and order in the affected area.
The arrest of the NURTW leader is seen as part of efforts by the police to curb violence associated with transport unions and restore public confidence in law enforcement.
