In a decisive move to curb rising crime in the North-West, the Katsina State Police Command has announced the arrest of a seven-man armed robbery syndicate responsible for a wave of violent attacks across Katsina metropolis. The arrest comes after weeks of intense surveillance and coordinated operations, bringing relief to residents who have lived in fear due to the group’s notorious activities.
According to a statement issued by SP Abubakar Sadiq, the spokesperson of the Katsina Police Command, the suspects were apprehended following a well-coordinated raid carried out in several hideouts within the city. The operation, which took place in the early hours of Monday, was based on actionable intelligence received from concerned residents and undercover officers.
During the operation, police recovered several dangerous weapons, including locally made pistols, knives, machetes, and a cache of stolen valuables such as phones, laptops, and cash. Preliminary investigations revealed that the gang had been involved in numerous house-to-house robberies, carjackings, and daylight muggings in high-density areas such as Sabon Layi, GRA, and Kofar Sauri.
Digging deeper into the investigation, police found that the gang operated in cells, with specific members assigned roles ranging from reconnaissance and burglary to getaway driving. They often targeted neighborhoods during power outages and made use of motorcycles for swift escapes.
One of the arrested suspects, identified as 23-year-old Hassan Abubakar, reportedly confessed to participating in over 15 robbery operations within the past two months. His confession has helped the police link the group to several unsolved cases in the area.
For residents of Katsina metropolis, the arrest of the syndicate marks a turning point in the fight against urban crime. Local traders and business owners expressed relief and praised the police for their swift action.
“I can finally sleep peacefully,” said Maryam Lawal, a resident of Sabon Layi. “We’ve lived in constant fear of break-ins. Sometimes they would strike twice in one week.”
Police Vow to Maintain Momentum
Speaking during a press briefing, the Katsina State Commissioner of Police, CP Aliyu Musa, assured the public that the force would continue its crackdown on criminal gangs operating in the region. He stressed the importance of community policing and encouraged residents to report suspicious activities.
“This arrest is just the beginning. We are committed to restoring law and order in Katsina. Let this serve as a warning to other criminal elements: there is no hiding place for you,” CP Musa declared.
