The Ogun State Government has announced that its free entry policy at the newly renovated Olumo Rock Tourist Complex will come to an end on Saturday, August 23, 2025. The decision was disclosed in a statement on Thursday by Kayode Akinmade, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to Governor Dapo Abiodun.
Governor Abiodun expressed gratitude to tourists and visitors for the unprecedented turnout since the reopening of the iconic cultural site. He noted that the initiative had achieved its goal of helping thousands rediscover the historical and cultural significance of Olumo Rock, a landmark heritage site in Abeokuta. However, the governor raised concerns over overcrowding and safety risks, citing near-stampede situations that required swift intervention by security agencies and on-site personnel.
“As much as we are delighted with the massive turnout, public safety remains paramount. At certain points, the crowd posed risks that could have led to a stampede,” Abiodun said.
He emphasized that ending the free entry policy would allow for better visitor management, while assuring the public of the government’s commitment to providing a safe, enjoyable, and memorable tourist experience.
“The Ogun government regrets any inconvenience this adjustment may cause and assures the public of its continued dedication to repositioning Olumo Rock as a world-class tourist destination,” the statement added.
