The Bola Tinubu administration has reaffirmed its commitment to making drug control a core pillar of Nigeria’s security strategy, pledging strong support for the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) through funding, inter-agency collaboration, and policy alignment.
At the commissioning of 46 new operational vehicles in Abuja, National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu commended NDLEA Chairman Brig.-Gen. Buba Marwa for transforming the agency into a result-driven force against illicit drugs, which he described as a key driver of insecurity. He stressed that drug trafficking funds insurgents, criminal gangs, and fuels violent crime, making mobility and swift operational response critical.
Marwa reported that in two years, the NDLEA has arrested over 40,800 offenders, seized 5.5 million kg of illicit drugs, destroyed more than 704 hectares of cannabis farms, secured 8,682 convictions, and rehabilitated over 24,000 users. He said the agency also carried out nearly 8,700 sensitisation campaigns under the War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) initiative.
The Attorney General, Chief of Defence Staff, and Bureau of Public Procurement chief all praised Tinubu’s leadership and Marwa’s performance, noting that the vehicles would strengthen nationwide operations and deter traffickers.
Marwa vowed to continue modernizing the NDLEA to match the evolving threats of the illicit drug trade.
