The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has confirmed the successful execution of an air interdiction mission in Zamfara State, which resulted in the elimination of more than 20 terrorists and the destruction of 21 motorcycles used by the armed group.
According to a statement released by NAF spokesperson, Air Vice Marshal Ehimen Ejodame, the strike took place on May 31, 2025, targeting a terrorist stronghold located south of Mai-Galma in Maru Local Government Area. The mission was part of a strategic effort to derail a planned mass attack on nearby civilian communities.
NAF disclosed that actionable intelligence had revealed a major build-up of terrorists preparing to strike.
“Further intelligence confirmed that the bandits had killed some farmers and abducted a number of civilians, including women and children,” Ejodame stated.
In response, NAF deployed aircraft under Operation FANSAN YAMMA to carry out an armed reconnaissance and, if possible, facilitate a rescue operation.
“Consequently, NAF aircraft under Operation FANSAN YAMMA was immediately dispatched on armed reconnaissance and possible rescue mission,” he added.
On arrival, air surveillance identified over 30 motorcycles transporting armed insurgents into a nearby forest. The insurgents reportedly opened fire upon spotting the aircraft, prompting a swift and precise counterstrike.
“On sighting the aircraft, the terrorists opened fire, prompting a precision engagement that led to the destruction of several motorcycles and the neutralisation of dozens of terrorists,” Ejodame revealed.
Following the airstrike, ground troops were deployed to secure the area and confirm the impact of the mission.
“Ground forces were immediately mobilised to exploit the situation. They confirmed the destruction of enemy assets and the neutralisation of over 20 terrorists,” the statement added.
Tragically, the operation also resulted in casualties among local defenders.
“Unfortunately, in the course of the operation, two local vigilantes lost their lives and two others sustained injuries in the crossfire,” Ejodame noted.
NAF expressed condolences over the loss of the vigilantes and reaffirmed its dedication to partnering with local communities to enhance regional safety.
“Efforts are ongoing to track and rescue the kidnapped villagers who were taken into the adjoining forest,” the statement concluded.
