A day of joy and celebration took a tragic turn in Liverpool on Monday evening as a car ploughed into a crowd during the city’s Premier League title parade, leaving several people injured. According to Merseyside Police, the incident occurred just after 6:00 p.m. local time near the end of the championship celebrations. The driver of the vehicle remained at the scene and was detained by police.
“We were contacted following reports a car had been in collision with a number of pedestrians,” the police confirmed in a statement.
Multiple Injuries Reported
An AFP journalist at the scene observed at least four individuals being carried away on stretchers. Footage circulating on social media shows a dark-coloured vehicle swerving into the jubilant crowd, where thousands had gathered to cheer on Liverpool FC’s players as they paraded the Premier League trophy atop an open-top bus.
Emergency Response
Emergency services responded swiftly. A fire engine, ambulance crews, and numerous police officers were seen surrounding the scene and establishing cordons to manage the aftermath. The North West Ambulance Service said its teams were “assessing the situation” in coordination with other emergency responders. “Our priority is to ensure people receive the medical help they need as quickly as possible,” the service said in a statement.
Ongoing Investigation
Authorities have not yet confirmed whether the incident was deliberate or accidental. The driver, described as a male, is currently in custody as investigations continue. The incident has cast a somber shadow over what had been a historic and joyous day for Liverpool supporters, celebrating the club’s first Premier League title since 2020. Police are urging the public to avoid speculation and to stay away from the affected area while investigations are ongoing.
