Tensions Persist as India and Pakistan Accuse Each Other of Violating Fresh Ceasefire

Just hours after announcing a U.S.-brokered ceasefire, India and Pakistan have traded fresh accusations of violations, casting immediate doubt on the durability of the fragile agreement that followed four days of the worst military confrontation in decades. Explosions were reported Saturday night in Indian-administered Kashmir, with residents in Srinagar and Jammu describing flashes in the sky and loud blasts. Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri swiftly blamed Pakistan, saying there were “repeated violations” of the ceasefire understanding.

“This is a breach of the understanding arrived at earlier today,” Misri said, adding that Indian forces were delivering an “appropriate response.” Pakistan’s foreign ministry responded with a statement reaffirming its commitment to the ceasefire but accused India of initiating the violations:

“Notwithstanding the violations being committed by India in some areas, our forces are handling the situation with responsibility and restraint.” The ceasefire was publicly announced by U.S. President Donald Trump on his Truth Social platform and later confirmed by officials in Islamabad and New Delhi. According to Pakistan’s Foreign Minister, the deal came after diplomatic efforts involving over three dozen countries.

Root of the Recent Escalation

The latest conflict was triggered by a deadly militant attack in Pahalgam on 22 April that killed 26 tourists, including one Nepali national. India blamed Pakistan-based militants and responded with airstrikes and artillery shelling on targets in Pakistan-administered Kashmir. Pakistan denied involvement in the attack and retaliated with its strikes, leading to casualties on both sides: 36 dead in Pakistan (including civilians), and at least 21 civilian deaths in India, according to respective military sources.

Both countries claim Kashmir in full, but each administers only part of it. The territory has been a flashpoint for three wars and numerous skirmishes between the nuclear-armed neighbours since 1947.

Diplomatic Pressure

Efforts to de-escalate were led by the U.S., with Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Vice President JD Vance engaging directly with Prime Ministers Narendra Modi and Shehbaz Sharif. Rubio confirmed that both countries had agreed to a broader framework of future talks at a neutral site.

Other global leaders echoed the need for lasting peace:

  • UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres welcomed “all efforts to de-escalate.”
  • UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer emphasized the importance of making the ceasefire “enduring and lasting,” confirming British involvement in the talks.
  • India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar warned that while India remains committed to the ceasefire, it will continue its “uncompromising stance against terrorism.”

Despite the ceasefire agreement, the immediate resumption of hostilities underscores the deep mistrust and volatility between India and Pakistan. Whether meaningful dialogue can begin—and whether it will hold amid competing narratives—remains uncertain.
